Short-Term Memory Test: Train Your Brain

Working memory is your brain's ability to temporarily hold and manipulate small amounts of information. It is a fundamental pillar of fluid intelligence, learning, and concentration. Neuroscience research shows that this capacity is not fixed — it improves with regular practice.

Our Memory Sequencer is a visual and auditory memorization exercise inspired by the Simon game (1978), but modernized and enriched with 4 distinct cognitive modes to target different areas of the brain.

How Does Cognitive Training Work?

Color Mode — Chromatic Visual Memory

This mode engages the visual cortex and episodic memory. By associating a color with a position, the brain creates strong visual anchors. This is the most accessible mode for beginners.

Numeric Mode — Verbal Working Memory

Associating a number with each pad additionally engages the prefrontal cortex and the phonological loop (the mental "scratch pad"). This mode is more demanding as it simultaneously engages two memory systems.

Spatial Mode — Pure Spatial Memory

Only the position in the grid matters — no colors, no numbers. This mode trains the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for spatial navigation and the formation of long-term memories.

Linguistic Mode — Auditory and Verbal Memory

The pads announce their name aloud via speech synthesis (Web Speech API). This mode takes training to the next level by combining auditory, visual, and sequential memory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is short-term-memory-test-cognitive-training free to use?

R: Yes, the short-term-memory-test-cognitive-training utility is 100% free. All tools on Dolf.in are accessible at no cost and without intrusive ads.

Q: Is my data secure?

R: Absolutely. Dolf.in uses a 'Serverless' approach: your data is processed locally in your browser and is never sent to our servers.

Q: Do I need to install any software?

R: No, no download or installation is required. Everything works directly in your web browser.

Q: What is short-term sensory memory and how does this game train it?

R: Short-term sensory memory (also called working memory) is the brain's ability to temporarily hold information for a few seconds. This game, inspired by the famous Simon (1978), engages both your visual and auditory memory by asking you to reproduce increasingly long sequences. Neuroscience studies show that practicing this type of sequencer improves selective attention, concentration, and the ability to retain information over time.

Q: What's the difference between 'Color', 'Numeric' and 'Spatial' mode?

R: 'Color' mode uses chromatic visual memory. 'Numeric' mode additionally activates the prefrontal cortex by associating a number with each position, which is harder as it engages two memory systems. 'Spatial' mode is the purest: only the position in the grid matters, forcing the brain to create a mental map of space.
